A Glimpse Into the Future
I recently read an article in the newspaper with the headline “Antiquated Paper Checks in Decline.” Hopefully this doesn’t come as a surprise to any Print Solutions readers. This has been a discussion for so many years.
The beauty of Print Solutions and DMIA, as I tell prospective members, is that we get a “heads up” years in advance of events that affect our livelihood. All we need to do is listen and then act on the information. This is an exciting time for our industry, with much change and many opportunities.
I suggest for those who look to the future that they listen to what’s being said in DMIA meetings. If I were starting over—actually if I were re-structuring my company as I have so many times over the past 25 years—I would explore new, yet discovered, RFID opportunities. RFID is just one of the technologies that will change the world within the next decade. We knew of the demise of checks more than 10 years ago, and we know of RFID technology today, but its full potential has yet to be explored. This is my suggestion to the youth in the industry. Listen to the footfalls and follow the trail. Ten years from now, when I’m 75 years old, you’ll be enjoying success, and no one will understand how you did it and how you were so smart to anticipate the future.
Correction
In the March issue, "Web-to-Print 2.0", we said that Consolidated Graphics Group Inc. was based in Houston. It is actually based in Cleveland. We regret the error.
