The “SuSTANDable” package minimizes the material needed to prevent shoplifting.

Earlier this year, when Wal-Mart announced a plan to rate the packaging materials and processes of its suppliers, thousands of companies rushed to reduce their package-to-product ratio and change transportation plans. In May 2007, J&J Packaging, Sunman, Ind., applied for a patent for a simple eco-friendly package named “SuSTANDable,” which is now available.
The package is a trapped blister card that converts to a standing clamshell. Although clamshell packages prevent shoplifting, the oversize items have a high package-to-product ratio. SuSTANDable reduces pilferage with specially designed perforations, an eco-friendly paper “oversize” (instead of plastic) and tear-resistant materials. The package ships flat, and can be used as a hanging blister card, in bulk display or self-standing on a countertop. It is recyclable, and can be made from recycled materials. Samples are available upon request.
